More About the Gallery

The gallery strives to represent a diverse range of artists and artistic mediums every year. As such, it serves as a cultural meeting place on campus and an effective teaching and learning tool. After all, art is insightful. It poses questions. It gets people talking. In other words, art engages its viewers.

Seven exhibits are arranged every year from a variety of artists and artistic mediums. Local and national artists as well as Chemeketa art students are showcased. Exhibits can range from black and white photography to a group show on cultural influence to a solo exhibit of an artist’s body of work to a showcase of glass craftsmanship to our yearly Student Art Show. Media such as video and installation have also been shown at the Art Gallery.

Our most popular exhibit of the year, the Student Art Show, is held every spring. It is a juried exhibit highlighting artistic endeavors in drawing, painting, ceramics, printmaking, photography, glass, bronze and design. For many participants, this a first exhibit opportunity and therefore quite meaningful. Filling out the entry form, properly presenting work and having it evaluated by professionals are common rituals for all artists, so participating in the Student Art Show is a step toward continuing artistic practice beyond college. The exhibit is juried by artists from the community. Awards are granted by the President of the College, the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Dean of Students and the jurors.
